Gender Affirmation Through Hair

written by AJ Fritzke-Brenny, Emily Lall, and Maeby Brosi

Since day one of opening Steller Hair Company, the mission has always been, “Come As You Are.” In a world that is constantly changing expectations of how we need to look and feel, it’s so important to have a space for people to feel comfortable to be their most authentic selves.

In late November Steller stylist, AJ, was thinking about the approaching holidays and how lonely it can feel for some people without the support of friends and family. This led to a conversation between AJ and fellow stylist, Maeby, about wanting to host an event to spread positivity and affirmation, specifically to those in the trans community of Minneapolis. Both being stylists, they recognized that there is a major disconnect between those that are gender non-conforming and the beauty industry.

On December 22nd, 8 gender non-conforming people and 4 stylists gathered to hear perspectives on past salon experiences, and to receive a gender-affirming haircut at no cost. The day started off with enjoying delicious Glam Doll Donuts and simply getting to know each other.

The conversation led to hearing ways to make salons more inclusive and welcoming. One guest, recounted that the day was the, “little ray of sunshine they needed”.

Being a part of making people feel seen and valued through a haircut and a positive salon experience is something Steller is incredibly proud of!

We look forward to hosting more gender non-conforming haircut events in the future!
